Misty and Aeval

Misty and Aeval joined our farm in May of 2014.  Misty's owner called us when he found Misty severely foundered in his pasture after she had given birth to her foal.  He asked us to take the foal and bottle feed her and we agreed to do it.  He was planning on putting Misty down. But Misty had other ideas.  Although she had not stood up since giving birth, when we tried to take her foal from her, she struggled to her feet and followed the foal into the trailer.  Her owner gave us permission to try to save her and the foal.  Misty was very weak and we did not expect her to survive, but once we saw her will to care for her foal (she would raise her leg so Aeval could nurse even as she lay on the ground), we knew we had to do everything in our power to help her.  She did survive and raised Aeval into a beautiful and carefree filly.  Misty died at the age of 25 when Aeval was three years old.  I think that Misty used sheer willpower to stay around until Aeval no longer needed her. RIP Misty, you did a good job with Aeval.
